Question:
“Can you use an expandable in an open hole as a packer seat?”

Answer:
Yes. Enventure’s SET® Systems use a steel pipe similar to L-80 which can be expanded to a variety of inside diameters (ID). In addition, Enventure provides a range of isolation and sealing technologies which can anchor and seal the expandable in the open hole. Because a variety of weights are available in over 13 sizes of SET® Systems, the required ID can usually be provided.

The SET® System that would be used for this application is an Openhole Clad (OHC). Enventure has installed over 35 OHC systems in the last decade with great success (97.3% Success Rate). The OHC is similar to an Openhole Liner, but differs in that it does not anchor back to existing casing. This enables multiple systems to be run while leaving various sections of the open hole uncovered (see Figure 1).

Previous applications using a SET System as a packer seat have been done in cased-hole environments. In one particular well, a total of six (6) Cased-hole Liners (CHL) were installed in one wellbore – five (5) of which were installed as packer seats. Damaged casing at the top of the well required a reliable and robust repair. However, any such repair created an ID restriction – and the packers for the completion were already on hand. In order to enable the planned completion while maintaining as much ID as possible, five (5) CHL in the horizontal section were installed, followed by the final system at the top of the well to repair damage (see Figure 2). All six (6) 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 in. SET® Systems were successfully installed and the operator completed the well as planned. A full case history of this well is available on the Enventure Technical Library.

Over the past four years, risk identification and mitigation response planning have also improved reliability. Many of the previous risks are totally eliminated by system enhancements and procedural re-design. Others have been addressed to reduce probability and/or impact of occurrence. Now, global expandable installation success is over 98% - all while pushing the operating limits of length, depth, angle, mud weight, and temperature.

Enventure has a history of helping operators find innovative solutions for their wells. For more information on how SET® technology can help your program, contact us at need.info@EnventureGT.com.
