An operator in the northern Colorado, Piceance basin discovered a part in 4-1/2 in. base casing. The casing split meant they would not be able to complete the lower six stages of the well. The operator initially used conventional methods in an effort to repair the damaged casing to recover the stranded reserves but were not successful.
The challenge was to restore pressure integrity to teh parted casing and maintain sufficient internal diameter to allow composite frac plugs to be run through and set in the base casing's larger ID below.
